Kathmandu: The Supreme Court of Nepal (SC) on Tuesday upheld the verdict of the Dipayal High Court (DHC) that had sentenced Resham Chaudhary to life imprisonment in the Tikapur carnage case. Chaudhary, who is currently in jail, had filed a petition at the SC seeking a review of the DHC's decision.

A division bench of justices Dr Ananda Mohan Bhattarai and Nahakul Subedi gave the verdict convicting Chaudhary of the charges. The bench also reduced the sentence of Laxman Tharu from five years to three years in jail.

However, the SC acquitted Ganga Ram Chaudhary and Sita Ram Chaudhary, who were also jailed in the case.

The Tikapur carnage took place on August 17, 2015, when a group of armed men opened fire on a peaceful rally in Tikapur, Kailali district. The attack killed nine people, including five police personnel.

Chaudhary was one of the main accused in the case. He was arrested in September 2015 and has been in jail since then.

The SC's verdict has been welcomed by the families of the victims. They have expressed hope that the verdict will bring justice to the victims and their families.
